Spring and autumn: time of allergies, colds, and asthma.

Updated: May 24, 2022

The two seasons of the year in which more pollen is found in the environment are spring and autumn. During the spring, we have the flowering of vegetation, and in the autumn, there is the pollination of some trees, such as cypresses. All this pollen triggers allergy symptoms such as:

  • tearing and redness of the eyes

  • runny nose congestion

  • skin allergies, such as small pimples, red patches, or itching

  • Colds

  • and all the above symptoms causing asthma

Allergy is a reaction of the immune system.

Normally, the immune system fights germs. But an allergic reaction is when the body identifies an allergen as a germ. Allergens could be pollen, mites, mold spores, animal dander, bites, medicines, and food.

Allergies can cause symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, fluid retention (swollen feet), or asthma.

Cold is an infection, usually benign, caused by several types of viruses, which occur mostly in the spring, summer, and autumn seasons. The form of infection is person-to-person contact and can also be transmitted with the nasal and oral secretions of the infected person. Most colds are produced by rhinoviruses, but there are also picornaviruses and coronaviruses.

Asthma is an inflammatory reaction that occurs in the bronchi, which are the ducts that carry air from the trachea to the lungs. This inflammation makes it difficult for air to pass through and causes shortness of breath and coughing. It is also common to hear whistles when breathing or feeling pressure in your chest.

Traditional herbs that relieve allergic symptoms

Purple echinacea helps to stimulate the body's natural endurance. It is a plant native to the north of the American continent and is widely cultivated in the United States and Europe. The root and leaf extract of the plant is used for its benefits of resisting and recovering faster from a cold or fluor, as it reduces the mucus and the duration of the disease.

Black elderberry helps maintain a healthy immune response. It is a shrub native to Europe, and the extract of its fruit is used when it is well ripe, which is when its flavonoids are concentrated more. It has traditionally been used to fight against the symptoms of respiratory diseases such as fever, cough, and infectious sinuses that cause pain and stuffy nose.

The larch tree improves immune compatibility. This tree is from the pine family, and an extract from the tree's wood is used. Its benefits are that it stimulates the microflora in the intestines and helps to have a healthier colon. Also, among the medicinal properties of this tree is that it helps to increase the development of immune cells.

Zinc is an essential mineral that is part of superoxide dismutase (SOD), which is a group of antioxidant enzymes that provide defenses to cells.
